Emotional validation is a key part of healthy relationships and personal well-being. It means recognizing and accepting another person’s feelings without judgment or dismissal. Many people struggle with feeling misunderstood or ignored, which can lead to stress, anxiety, or strained relationships. Counseling services in the Tri-Cities area, including Port Moody and Coquitlam, offer valuable support to help individuals experience emotional validation and develop stronger emotional skills.

What Is Emotional Validation?

Emotional validation involves acknowledging someone’s feelings as real and understandable. It does not mean agreeing with everything they say or feel, but it means showing respect for their emotional experience. When someone feels validated, they feel heard, accepted, and supported.

For example, if a friend shares that they are upset about a work conflict, emotional validation would be responding with something like, “That sounds really frustrating. It makes sense you feel that way.” This response shows you recognize their feelings without minimizing or dismissing them.

I recognize with gratitude that the communities I serve — including Port Moody, Coquitlam, Surrey, Vancouver, and the greater Lower Mainland — exist on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples, which include the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō, and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. As a counsellor, I acknowledge the strength, wisdom, and resilience that continue to flow through these lands and the people who have cared for them since time immemorial. In my work, I strive to honour these histories by creating a space rooted in respect, healing, and genuine connection.
