Anxiety is a natural part of life, we all experience it. There is good and bad anxiety, but when it begins to interfere with daily activities, learning simple strategies can make a big difference. Here are five of my favourite tips that you can start to use in your everyday life:

  1. Focus on Your Breathing

Slow, intentional breaths help calm the nervous system. Try inhaling for four seconds, holding for two, and exhaling for six.

  1. Break Tasks Into Smaller Steps

Anxiety often grows when tasks feel overwhelming. Break challenges into smaller, manageable pieces and celebrate each step forward.

  1. Challenge Unhelpful Thoughts

Ask yourself: Is this thought a fact or a fear? Redirecting catastrophizing thinking helps reduce emotional intensity.

  1. Create a Mantra

"I am enough", "It will be okay", etc. Pick a mantra that suits you the best and use it everyday when you are feeling anxious.

  1. Reach Out for Support

Talking to a trusted friend, loved one, or clinical counsellor can help you feel grounded and seen. You are not alone.

If you live in the lower mainland and are suffering with anxiety or need a counsellor to talk to, please feel free to reach out to me. I am located in Port Moody, but offer vitual appointments as well.

I recognize with gratitude that the communities I serve — including Port Moody, Coquitlam, Surrey, Vancouver, and the greater Lower Mainland — exist on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples, which include the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō, and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. As a counsellor, I acknowledge the strength, wisdom, and resilience that continue to flow through these lands and the people who have cared for them since time immemorial. In my work, I strive to honour these histories by creating a space rooted in respect, healing, and genuine connection.
